Every autumn the same scramble plays out: customers show up at the last minute, your preferred supplier is out of the popular sizes, and the warehouse is still full of summer sets nobody collected. If you run a workshop, distribute tyres or manage a fleet, cold-season planning needs to start three to four months before the first frost — not one week before.

When to make the switch

The baseline rule: when the 7-day average temperature drops consistently below 7 °C, summer rubber loses measurable grip. You do not need to wait for snow — winter compounds are formulated to stay pliable below that threshold. For fleets this means you can schedule the changeover by calendar (October–November in Central Europe), not by weather forecast.

RegionOptimal changeover windowLegal requirement
RomaniaNovember – MarchMandatory on roads marked with winter sign
GermanyOctober – April (O-to-O rule)Situational: mandatory on snow/ice
Austria1 November – 15 AprilMandatory when conditions require it
HungaryNo fixed datesRecommended; authorities may fine absence in winter conditions
France1 November – 31 March (mountain zones)Mandatory in alpine and central departments
Italy15 November – 15 AprilMandatory on signposted road sections

M+S versus 3PMSF — what actually matters

The M+S (Mud and Snow) marking is a manufacturer self-declaration — no independent test is required. The 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) symbol confirms the tyre has passed a braking test on packed snow per UNECE R117. The practical difference: on compacted snow, a 3PMSF tyre stops on average 2–4 metres shorter than an M+S-only tyre at the same speed.

  • Most EU states accept both markings as "winter equipment", but the regulatory trend is towards 3PMSF-only recognition.
  • Germany requires 3PMSF for tyres produced after 2018 if you want legal compliance in winter conditions.
  • All-season tyres bearing 3PMSF are a valid option for urban fleets with low-to-medium mileage — they eliminate the seasonal swap.
  • For trucks and heavy commercial vehicles, 3PMSF on the steer axle is strongly recommended; on the drive axle it depends on the route profile.

Storing large volumes between seasons

A set of four car tyres takes up roughly 0.5 m³. Multiply by 200 sets — the seasonal throughput of a mid-sized workshop — and you need 100 m³ of planned space. Incorrect storage accelerates degradation: exposure to sunlight, temperature extremes or solvents shortens useful life.

  1. 1

    Control the environment

Store indoors, away from direct sunlight, between 10–25 °C and clear of ozone sources (electric motors, compressors). Ideal: a dedicated space with minimal fluorescent lighting.

  2. 2

    Correct positioning

Tyres without rims: upright, rotated a quarter-turn monthly. Tyres on rims: flat, stacked max 4 high, or on a wall rack.

  3. 3

    Labelling and traceability

Each set gets a code: customer, size, DOT date, tread depth at intake. At volume, a management system (even a structured spreadsheet) prevents mix-ups and losses.

  4. 4

    Plan the collection

Contact customers 2–3 weeks before season start to schedule fitment. Sets uncollected for over a year waste space and tie up cash flow.

Procurement planning for the cold season

Manufacturers deliver winter stock to distributors between May and September. Those who order early get full availability on sizes and benefit from "early bird" pricing. Those who order in October often find the most popular sizes (205/55 R16, 225/45 R17, 225/65 R17 SUV) already allocated out at the premium brands.

  • June–July: analyse last winter’s sales, identify the top 20 sizes and place anticipatory orders.
  • August: confirm quantities with your supplier, lock pricing where possible.
  • September: stock should be in your warehouse, ready to fit.
  • October–November: peak demand — focus on fitting and selling, not on procurement.
Winter never arrives unexpectedly. It only catches those who did not order in summer.

What we offer for the winter season

The TyreCenter catalogue permanently carries the winter ranges from leading brands — from Michelin Alpin, Continental WinterContact and Bridgestone Blizzak to mid-range and budget options with 3PMSF marking. Availability updates in real time, and orders placed before 14:00 ship the same day. Prices are from your personalised grid, calculated automatically — no repetitive negotiations on every order.

For workshops and fleets that want guaranteed volume, we offer pre-booking programmes: confirm quantities in summer, receive them on your chosen date, at the price locked when you ordered. Talk to the commercial team for details.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what partners ask us most often.

What is the real difference between M+S and 3PMSF?

M+S is a manufacturer self-declaration with no mandatory test. 3PMSF requires a snow-braking test per UNECE R117, with measurably better results. In practice a 3PMSF tyre stops 2–4 metres shorter on snow at 40 km/h.

Are all-season tyres enough for winter?

It depends on route and climate. All-season tyres with 3PMSF are legally compliant in most EU countries and perform acceptably in moderate conditions (urban, cold rain, light snow). On mountain routes or with frequent ice, a dedicated winter tyre remains superior.

When should I order winter stock for my workshop?

Ideally between June and August. Manufacturers ship winter stock to distributors in this window, and availability on popular sizes drops significantly from October onwards.

How do I calculate how many winter sets I need?

Start from last season’s winter-fitment count, adjusted for customer-base growth or contraction. Add a 10–15 % buffer for walk-in demand and unexpected sizes.

Can you store my customers’ summer tyres over winter?

Tyre-hotel service is not offered directly by TyreCenter, but many of our partners have built their own storage offering — ordering new-season rubber from us and managing customer sets in-house.
